Who Should Attend

Are you a patent attorney or patent counsel in a corporate IP or patent department, or a patent attorney in a law firm? Have you taken on a leading position or are you about to do so? Then this course is designed for you. It also addresses in-house IP legal counsel who lead or are preparing to lead teams.

Objective of the Event

IP attorneys who take on leadership often are not prepared for it. Their standing rests on technical and legal expertise, but managing people requires different skills, and the cost of neglecting them reaches well beyond the team. In corporate IP departments, leaders depend on inventors and business units they do not manage. In law firms, partners and senior associates must lead teams while still meeting billable targets.

Over four modules, Jane Wainwright, a former partner who headed a biotechnology patents team at a multi-jurisdiction IP firm and has more than twenty years of experience in legal services, will teach the leadership skills that IP professionals need in practice. Participants learn to use their strengths, values and drivers as a basis for working with others, to build effective teams through delegation, feedback and psychological safety, and to define their role as IP leaders, including how to influence stakeholders without formal authority. The final module addresses communication, from listening and questioning to leading meetings and handling disagreement. On completion, participants will be able to lead teams with greater confidence and communicate more effectively within their organisations.

Your Benefit

On completion of the course, participants will be able to lead teams with greater confidence and communicate more effectively within their organisations.
